Exploring Themes in Children’s Poetry: Love, Friendship, Nature, and More

So, a lot of people tell me …how do you motivate children to start writing… The answer is to start with poems as they are fun and easy and well, about the theme- it lies all around them. Most importantly, we need to make this a fun activity and, therefore, suggest fun themes a child can relate to.

A child’s world is simple yet so meaningful. Let’s start with the universal theme of love as there are so many things a child loves from parents to grandparents and siblings to their favourite toys and friends.

Another theme could be surroundings – from their home to the garden and their school to the park. These are the first places of outings and they are so much fun. Furthermore, picnics, Zoo trips, or even birthday parties can be a source of writing their first-hand experiences based on their thoughts.

Nature can also be a great inspiration when kids explore newer places. Their first-hand experience of Sea, Rivers, Mountains and Rain can be enchanting. Behind everything, there is a story that can be uniquely interpreted by every child.

The other themes that can be explored could be imagination, friendship, dreams and memories. They not only stimulate imagination and artistic expression but also ignite a

power of kindness and the difference we all make every day without even realising it.

Things to follow:

  • Choose a relaxed time and place where you & your child can spend time together
  • Give them a notebook specially for them to write their poems.
  • Respect their preference and interests
  • Be patient and supportive throughout

Another way is to show your enthusiasm for poetry by writing and sharing your own Hindi poems with them. Serve as a role model and mentor, demonstrating your passion for creative expression and the joy of writing poetry in Hindi. By providing diverse and engaging themes, children can unleash their creativity, express themselves freely, and develop a love for poetry writing.

Let’s start.
